Romania pension and labor rights face legislative and legal challenges

In Romania, legislative and judicial developments are impacting various labor and pension sectors. The Industry Commission recently voted unanimously for a project allowing miners and energy workers at Complexul Energetic Oltenia to retire at age 52. However, lawmakers noted that this proposal may fail because Romania is prohibited from modifying its pension laws for five years under commitments made through the PNRR.

Separately, the Pension House has rejected a Court of Accounts report claiming over 210,000 pensions were underpaid. Nicolae Giugea, head of the Pension House, contested the findings, stating the report relies on probabilities and extrapolations rather than quantified data.

In the education sector, the Iași Teachers' Union (USLIP Iași) won a definitive court case at the Iași Court of Appeal. The ruling mandates monetary compensation for unused annual leave upon contract termination, prioritizing EU law over national legislation that had previously prohibited such payments for budget employees.
