Romania criminalizes forced marriage and cohabitation
The Romanian Parliament has passed a law criminalizing forced marriages and forced cohabitation. The legislation aims to protect minors and adults from being coerced into marital or similar relationships.
Under the new law, perpetrators who force individuals under the age of 16 into such arrangements face prison sentences ranging from two to seven years. For victims over the age of 16, the penalty is between one and five years of imprisonment. Judges may also strip offenders of certain rights.
Sentences may be increased if the perpetrator was in a position of care, education, or protection over the victim, or if a weapon or dangerous substance was used during the crime. The law also criminalizes the transport or escorting of a minor or adult to another country for the purpose of forcing a marriage or preventing their return to their home state.
Following the parliamentary vote, the law must be promulgated by the President of Romania. To ensure public awareness, the legislation includes a provision requiring TV and radio stations to broadcast warning messages during specific evening hours for four months after the law takes effect.
