Romania criminalization of forced marriage

Overview

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies adopted legislation to criminalize forced marriage and forced cohabitation. The law is designed to protect both minors and adults from being coerced into relationships against their will.

Under the new legal framework, individuals who force those under 16 into such arrangements face prison sentences of two to seven years, while those forcing victims over 16 face one to five years. Penalties may be increased if the perpetrator held a position of care or protection over the victim, or if weapons were used. Additionally, the law criminalizes the transport of victims across borders to facilitate forced unions or prevent their return home.

Following the parliamentary vote, the law requires presidential promulgation. To promote public awareness, the legislation mandates that TV and radio stations broadcast warning messages during specific evening hours for a four-month period once the law takes effect.
