Romania pushes forward highway upgrades: A1 repairs, new mountain road, A3 extensions and Bacău bypass

Road works on the A1 motorway near the Nădlac‑Cunța sector began on 15 July and will continue until the end of July, restricting traffic to a single lane and the emergency lane while repairs are carried out.

The county council of Timiș signed a contract for the 16.5‑km “Transluncani 2” mountain road, a €90 million project that will modernise more than 56 km of routes across Timiș, Caraș‑Severin and Hunedoara and improve links to the A1 motorway.

Progress on the A3 Transylvania motorway continues. The Chiribiș‑Suplacu de Barcău section, originally due in July 2026, is now expected to open in September‑October 2026, while the Zimbor‑Poarta Sălajului stretch is slated to enter traffic in the coming weeks, according to Deputy Lucian Bode. At the same time, authorities confirmed that the Bacău bypass (A7) will remain open for traffic, with no immediate closure required for ongoing works. The transport ministry reiterated its 2026 target of completing 230‑250 km of new motorways and expressways.
