Spanish F-18 jet shoots down drone in Romanian airspace

NATO air policing F-18 fighter jet drone interception Romanian airspace violation Eastern Flank security

A Spanish F-18 fighter jet, operating as part of a NATO air policing mission, shot down an unidentified drone that entered Romanian airspace on Sunday morning. The aircraft intercepted the target after it was detected entering the country from the direction of Moldova, approximately 24 kilometers north of Galați. The interception and subsequent destruction of the drone occurred at 05:01 local time.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that the drone debris fell in an uninhabited area between the localities of Băleni and Cudalbi in Galați County. This incident marks the fourth time a drone has been shot down within Romanian territory since the beginning of the year.

While the Romanian authorities have not officially confirmed the drone's origin, NATO spokespersons indicated that the aircraft appeared to be of Russian origin. The event highlights the ongoing security tensions on NATO's eastern flank due to the conflict in Ukraine, as Romania shares a 614-kilometer land border with the neighboring country.
