Romania develops plan to unblock sheep and goat exports

Romania is implementing a strategic plan to unblock sheep and goat exports, which are currently facing a crisis. Alexandru Bociu, president of the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), announced that a proposal is being consulted with industry associations before being presented to the European Commission in Brussels.

The recovery plan includes targeted vaccination programs in Tulcea and Constanta counties to address disease concerns. Bociu emphasized that the country aims to return to its previous position as a leading European exporter of live animals and carcasses.

However, authorities have highlighted challenges regarding compliance. Bociu warned that irresponsible breeders and farmers who fail to follow legal protocols hinder progress. ANSVSA has stated it will refer evidence of irregularities, such as improper use of ear tags, to the Prosecutor's Office.

In a related development regarding animal health, a new outbreak of sheep pox was confirmed in Peceneaga, Tulcea county. Officials reported high virulence and mortality among affected animals, prompting calls for immediate preventive measures and potential restrictions on animal movement within the county.
