Romanian diesel price tops 10 lei per litre amid rising fuel costs

After the government lifted the price‑cap on diesel on 1 July, the premium diesel grade in Romania rose above 10 lei per litre, while standard diesel reached 9.43 lei in Bucharest and 8.98 lei nationally. The increase added pressure on transport, logistics, agriculture and industry, where diesel is a major cost component.

By 8 July, the minimum standard diesel price in Bucharest was 9.43 lei, a 0.25‑lei rise from the previous day, whereas gasoline remained largely stable at 8.62 lei. Romania was the only EU member where diesel prices rose month‑on‑month in May 2026, according to Eurostat.

On 7 July, major retailers Rompetrol and Socar cut prices by about 3 bani per litre, bringing standard diesel back to roughly 9.43‑9.44 lei and gasoline to about 8.62‑8.64 lei. The reductions followed the expiry of a 30‑bani‑per‑litre diesel tax relief and the fiscal hike applied from 1 July. The government is considering a new diesel price‑cap that could be adopted in an extraordinary parliamentary session if prices do not fall further.
