Romania boosts diesel subsidy for farmers with 94.3 million lei budget increase
The Romanian Government approved an amendment to the diesel‑subsidy scheme for agriculture, adding 94.3 million lei to the 2026 budget and raising the total allocation to 714.3 million lei. The subsidy, amounting to 2.697 lei per litre, covers the difference between the standard excise rate and the reduced rate applied to diesel used for mechanised farm work. Payments are made through the Agency for Payments and Intervention for Agriculture (APIA) and are intended to fully fund the support for the first quarter of 2026, covering about 57.6 million litres of diesel and amounting to 155.26 million lei.
Vice‑premier Tánczos Barna, interim minister of Agriculture, said the extra budget will help keep farms competitive. At the same time, diesel prices in Romania have surged past the 10.5 lei per litre threshold, prompting a government‑led working command meeting with fuel‑industry representatives to monitor supply. A temporary crisis situation has been declared, with measures to reduce diesel excise, limit exports and adjust commercial margins to stabilise the market.
These actions are part of a broader response to rising fuel prices and supply pressures affecting both Romania and neighboring Moldova, where diesel prices have also risen sharply.
