Romania drone crash heightens NATO‑Russia tensions

A drone strike in the Romanian port city of Galaţi injured a 14‑year‑old girl and sparked alarm across NATO‑member states. The incident, the latest of at least 47 drone sightings in Romania since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, prompted NATO officials to condemn the “insufficient sensor and interception systems” on the alliance’s eastern flank. European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, called for a rapid build‑up of air‑defence capabilities, warning that the episode “crosses another red line.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin denied any Russian involvement, asking for concrete evidence and stating, “Who said it is a Russian drone?” He warned that premature accusations could further inflame relations. The incident has renewed discussions in Warsaw, where Poland recently shot down more than a dozen unmanned aircraft, and in the Baltic states, which have also reported repeated violations.
