EU condemns Russian drone strike in Galaţi, Romania, and votes on resolution

On 29 May 2026 a Russian‑loaded explosive drone crashed onto a residential block in Galaţi, Romania, prompting a strong political reaction across the European Union. EU leaders are set to include a condemnation of the incident in the European Council’s final declaration, describing it as a serious threat to the bloc’s eastern flank.

The European Parliament subsequently adopted a resolution denouncing “unacceptable provocative actions of Russia and drone incursions in Romania, the Baltic states and Finland”. The vote tallied 412 in favour, 63 against and 53 abstentions. The only Romanian MEP to vote against the resolution was Diana Iovanovici Șoșoacă, an unaffiliated member; all other Romanian deputies voted for it. Opposition came mainly from euro‑skeptic and far‑right groups, while the main pro‑European parties supported the text.

Parliamentarians called for stronger military support for EU border states, tougher sanctions on Russia and increased defence investment, including the EU’s new defence‑funding mechanism SAFE and a potential European nuclear umbrella. The incident has therefore become a focal point for discussions on EU security policy and Eastern‑flank defence.
