Romania education crisis as PISA scores show decline
Recent PISA test results indicate a significant decline in educational performance among Romanian students. Data shows that approximately half of the students in Romania fall into the category of functional illiteracy, struggling to comprehend written text and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Compared to the 2022 assessments, Romania's scores have dropped across all measured categories. The average scores for science, reading comprehension, and mathematics were 425, 413, and 419 respectively, falling below the OECD averages of 482, 461, and 463.
There is a notable disparity between urban and rural education levels. While urban students perform closer to the OECD average, rural students face significant gaps, with differences reaching up to 109 points in mathematics, 98 points in science, and 94 points in reading.
