Romania education results show nearly half of students struggle with math and literacy
Recent educational assessments, including PISA and national evaluations, indicate that nearly half of Romanian students struggle with fundamental skills in mathematics and Romanian language and literature. Interim Education Minister Mihai Dimian noted that these results reflect a significant gap in core competencies, suggesting that the current system is not adequately preparing students for the professional demands of the next 5 to 10 years.
The data highlights a widening performance gap between advantaged and disadvantaged students over the last decade. Socioeconomic factors, such as lack of access to resources and insufficient state investment, are contributing to increased inequality. Reports indicate that students from impoverished backgrounds or rural areas face greater challenges, as the educational system fails to compensate for domestic deficiencies. Additionally, infrastructure issues persist in some regions, with schools still lacking basic indoor facilities.
