Romania endures extreme heat wave, temps hit 41°C

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued red‑code heat warnings for seven western and north‑western Romanian counties – Maramureș, Satu Mare, Sălaj, Bihor, Arad, Timiș and Caraș‑Severin – where temperatures are expected to reach 39‑41 °C. The heat index is projected to exceed the critical 80‑unit threshold, affecting roughly three million residents with severe thermal discomfort.

Across Romania, the heat wave will persist through early August, with maximums of 40‑41 °C in the west and north‑west, 36‑38 °C in the capital Bucharest, and 30‑31 °C along the Black Sea coast. A brief period of thunderstorms, hail and strong gusts is forecast for mountainous areas later in the week, after which temperatures are expected to gradually decline.

Neighbouring Moldova is also experiencing the surge, recording up to 38 °C in several regions. Authorities have issued health advisories urging hydration, limited sun exposure and protection for vulnerable groups.
