Neptun Deep project could make Romania a major EU gas producer

The Neptun Deep natural gas project in the Black Sea, a 4 billion euro investment developed by OMV Petrom and Romgaz in a 50/50 partnership, is expected to begin production in the first quarter of 2027. According to an assessment by S&P Global Ratings, the project could position Romania as one of the largest natural gas producers in the European Union and significantly reduce the country's dependence on energy imports.

Economically, the project is anticipated to bolster Romania's external accounts through increased gas exports. S&P Global Ratings estimates that the current account deficit will gradually decrease from 7.5% of GDP in 2026 and 7% in 2027 to 5.9% by 2029. This strategic development coincides with the European Union's timeline to phase out Russian gas imports, providing a critical window for Romania to establish itself as a regional energy player.
