Romania expands gas exports to Moldova as Romgaz targets Azomureş fertilizer assets
Romania’s direct gas export to the Republic of Moldova rose by roughly one‑third, moving from about 2‑2.1 million cubic metres per day to 3 million cubic metres. The increase comes amid a heat wave, with Moldova fully dependent on Romanian supplies after ending its long‑term Gazprom contract. Gas is transmitted through Transgaz’s network, with additional imports routed via Bulgaria, while storage capacity in Romania stands at 49% of its total.
Separately, Romgaz, Romania’s largest natural‑gas producer, is set to acquire the production assets of the Azomureş chemical complex in Târgu Mureş. The deal, negotiated with Swiss‑based Ameropa, includes facilities built between 1968 and 1981 and anticipates gas availability only after 2027. Romgaz plans to convert the acquired gas into fertilizers, aiming to meet up to 90 % of the national fertilizer market. The transaction involves environmental investments estimated at around €500 million, alongside a €478 million green‑transition plan through 2031. Romgaz reported a net profit of 973 million lei in Q1 2026, though revenue fell 10 % due to lower gas deliveries and regulated‑price sales.
