Romania expands gas pipeline network by 700 km and pushes for smarter seasonal procurement

Transgaz announced a strategic investment programme worth over €9 billion, aiming to extend Romania’s national gas transport system by more than 700 km between 2026 and 2028. The expansion, part of a “vertical corridor” project, is intended to position Romania as a regional energy hub and to enable integration of Black Sea gas into the national grid. Funding will combine company resources with European Union support.

Separately, energy experts in Moldova and the wider region warned that last‑minute gas purchases inflate consumer bills. They urged regulators to adopt monthly contracting schedules, securing at least 90 % of winter‑season volumes by 1 December and spreading purchases across the year. The proposals include a 60 % pre‑planned monthly purchase quota and a flexible 40 % discretionary tranche, with oversight from national regulators such as ANRE. Both initiatives aim to improve energy security and price stability for households and industrial users.
