Romania extends irrigation funding deadline and accelerates PNRR progress

The Agency for Financing Rural Investments (AFIR) has announced a two-month extension for the DR-26 funding session, which supports the establishment of irrigation systems. The new deadline for submitting project applications is July 15, 2024, at 16:00. This extension aims to accommodate farmers needing to provide water management permits to prove water availability, in compliance with EU Regulation No. 2115/2021.

The DR-26 funding line, part of the 2023–2027 Strategic Plan, has a total allocation of €102,421,176. Eligible investments include local farm-level irrigation systems, water metering, and the construction or modernization of collection and storage basins. Beneficiaries can receive up to €500,000, with non-reimbursable public support covering 65% of eligible costs. To date, applications totaling €4,206,106 have been submitted.

Separately, Romania’s Minister of Investments and European Projects, Mihai Alexandru Ghigiu, has emphasized the urgency of resolving outstanding administrative procedures to secure National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funds. With a deadline of November 6 to clear backlogs, the ministry is increasing staff and coordinating with other ministries to ensure funds reach the country within the year.
