Eurozone inflation rises to 3.8% in September as Romania leads EU rates

Eurostat final data for September 2026 indicates that annual inflation in the Eurozone and the European Union both rose to 3.8%, up from 3.2% in August. In the Eurozone, energy prices were the primary driver, contributing 1.71 percentage points to the annual rate, followed by services at 1.52 percentage points.

Within the EU, Romania recorded the highest annual inflation rate at 6.5%, while Lithuania (6.1%) and Bulgaria (5.6%) followed. Conversely, Sweden reported the lowest rate at 1%, with Hungary and Denmark both at 2.1%. In Greece, the annual inflation rate was confirmed at 5.1%, with a monthly increase of 1.9%.

In Romania, economic discussions highlight the pressure of rising energy costs and the importance of securing remaining PNRR funds, totaling 6.43 billion euros, to meet budget deficit targets. Romanian officials have warned that failure to validate these funds could force the state to cover costs from the national budget.
