Romania faces intense heat wave with temperatures up to 40 °C
The National Meteorology Administration (ANM) has issued yellow and orange heat‑wave alerts for Romania from 30 July 10:00 UTC until 3 August 10:00 UTC, covering most of the country. Temperatures are expected to reach 38‑40 °C in western areas such as the West Plain (Câmpia de Vest) and the Banat region, with eight counties (Olt, Dolj, Mehedinţi, Caraș‑Severin, Timiș, Arad, Bihor and Satu Mare) receiving yellow alerts for values up to 37 °C.
The temperature‑humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 in the affected zones, and tropical night temperatures of 20‑24 °C are forecast for several regions. The heat wave is projected to persist and intensify through the week of 3‑9 August, extending across Banat, Crișana, Oltenia and later into Maramureș, Transylvania and other low‑lying areas.
ANM warns that the discomfort will be pronounced, urging the public to stay hydrated, avoid peak‑hour sun exposure and protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses.
