Romania faces political deadlock as early elections and new government remain uncertain

Sociologist Vladimir Ionaș warned that early parliamentary elections in Romania are becoming inevitable, citing the depth of the political crisis and a looming downgrade by international rating agencies that could push the country into junk status. He estimated the cost of snap elections at around €300 million and suggested they could be scheduled by the end of the year.

President Nicușor Dan said the crisis must be resolved quickly but declined to predict whether a new full‑power government will be installed by September. He noted that the current caretaker government, led by Ilie Bolojan, has been in place since the cabinet’s dismissal on 5 May after the PSD‑AUR withdrew support. Dan emphasized ongoing informal talks with parties and said formal consultations are not needed, while stressing that citizens are awaiting an end to the uncertainty so they can plan their lives.

Both officials highlighted the impact of the deadlock on ordinary Romanians and the urgency of reaching a political solution.
