Romania faces potential early parliamentary elections
Romania is facing the possibility of early parliamentary elections for the first time in its post-December history. The country has been experiencing a prolonged political crisis following the dismissal of the government led by Ilie Bolojan on May 5, 2026. Since that time, the nation has lacked an executive with full powers.
After several failed attempts to form a new government, the scenario of early elections has resurfaced. Unlike partial elections, which fill specific vacancies, early elections involve electing a new Parliament in its entirety before the usual end of its mandate. Under the Romanian Constitution, such elections can only be organized if the Parliament is dissolved according to strict legal procedures, rather than through a simple political decision.
