Romania is facing a political and fiscal deadlock over the proposed new salary law for the public sector. The project, which aims to reform wages, has seen its estimated financial impact rise from 8 billion lei to 12 billion lei. This increase has prompted the European Commission to demand compensatory measures, such as extending the health insurance contribution (CASS) to pensions, to ensure fiscal stability and protect the country's credit rating.

Political leaders, including Sorin Grindeanu, have warned that the tight deadlines for passing the law through Parliament and the Constitutional Court are nearly impossible to meet. This delay threatens a critical milestone in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which could result in the loss of 770 million euros in EU funds.

Social unrest is mounting as various trade unions have expressed strong opposition. The National Union Force of Law (SNFL) has announced protests at prefectures and party headquarters starting September 1st, threatening a general strike if the project is not renegotiated. Additionally, former Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete warned that if the law leads to a decrease in medical professionals' income, it could trigger a massive exodus of doctors from the country.
