Romania's PSD urges urgent full‑power government to secure €16.68 bn SAFE defence funds

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) has issued multiple calls for an immediate formation of a full‑power Romanian government, warning that the current political deadlock threatens the country's access to the European Union's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) programme. SAFE provides €16.68 billion for defence equipment, and PSD argues that only a government with full executive authority can initiate the loan‑agreement bill required by OUG 64/2007 on public debt. The demissioned cabinet, according to PSD, lacks the competence to draft the necessary legislation, leaving Romania unable to approve the legal framework for the funds.

PSD stresses that the country's economy is in recession, with high inflation, rising unemployment and public debt, and that prolonged stalemate endangers citizens' living standards. The party urges all parliamentary parties to set aside “political egos”, build a majority for citizens, and present a coalition to President Nicușor Dan, who has scheduled further consultations at Cotroceni Palace. The opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) disputes PSD's claim, calling it misinformation, but the core issue remains the urgent need for a functional executive to unlock the defence financing.
