Romania faces security threats from reported Russian secret drone bases

Security concerns are rising on NATO's eastern flank following reports of approximately ten secret Russian military bases. According to an investigation by The Telegraph, these bases are reportedly equipped with newly constructed launch ramps for advanced, long-range suicide drones. These assets are allegedly being used to strike targets in Ukraine by exploiting vulnerabilities in air defense systems.

Military analyst and retired General Virgil Bălăceanu noted that while the existence of such bases might not be a total surprise to satellite intelligence, they pose a significant threat to nearby countries, including Romania, which falls within the potential strike range of these drones. Bălăceanu emphasized that Romania must prioritize the integration of new anti-drone defense systems within the current year.

Separately, discussions regarding the nature of the strategic partnership between Romania and the United States continue to draw scrutiny. Some perspectives characterize the bilateral relationship as one of dependency, suggesting that American political, economic, and military presence has heavily influenced Romanian sovereignty and strategic decision-making.
