Romania faces significant financial literacy gap

A recent Flash Eurobarometer report highlights a significant gap in financial literacy among Romanians. While 51% of citizens claim to possess high or very high financial knowledge, objective assessments show that only 13% actually meet this level. This figure is notably lower than the European average of 26%.

In response to this discrepancy, Banca Comercială Română (BCR) launched the 'Naționala de Edu Fin' initiative in May 2026. The program allows citizens to test and improve their financial skills through a 12-question questionnaire based on Eurobarometer methodology. Over 30,000 people have participated in the test so far. While participants in the program show encouraging results—averaging approximately 9 correct answers out of 12—the initiative aims to address the broader national need for practical financial management skills.
