Romania faces three‑month political deadlock after Bolojan government fall

Romania has been without a full‑power government for three months following the dismissal of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s cabinet on 5 May 2026. A motion of no confidence, backed by PSD, AUR and PACE – Întâi România, passed with 281 votes, far exceeding the 233 needed. State services continue – salaries and pensions are paid, trains run with delays – but institutions operate with “inertia” and many reforms remain stalled.

Public dissatisfaction has grown across the country. Citizens in Iași, Vrancea and Argeș voiced frustration, saying “Politica e la pământ!” and demanding stability, accusing politicians of putting personal power above the population’s needs. The lack of an executive hampers the adoption of reforms, the use of EU‑funded PNRR projects, and the response to the recession and energy crisis.

The political stalemate highlights the challenges of governing without a decisive cabinet and raises concerns about the country’s ability to address social, economic and energy issues in the coming months.
