Romania faces West Nile virus surge and rabies prevention campaign

Romania is facing dual public health challenges involving West Nile virus and rabies. Nationally, 83 cases of West Nile virus have been reported, including 72 confirmed and 11 probable cases, resulting in five deaths. All deceased individuals were elderly patients with multiple comorbidities. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous year, with cases nearly tripling.

In Cluj County, authorities are launching an aerial rabies vaccination campaign for foxes between September 25 and September 30. The campaign involves distributing vaccine baits in natural habitats such as pastures and forests to limit the spread of the virus. Pet owners are advised to keep dogs on leashes and use muzzles in targeted areas to prevent accidental consumption of the baits.

Health authorities in Sibiu remain on alert despite having no confirmed West Nile cases this season, noting that the prolonged warm season keeps mosquito activity high.
