Romania fuel prices hit record highs for gasoline and diesel

Fuel prices in Romania have reached historic highs, with standard gasoline hitting a record of approximately 9.70 to 9.79 lei per liter. Simultaneously, diesel prices have surpassed the 10 lei per liter threshold across all major fuel networks, including OMV Petrom, MOL, Rompetrol, and Lukoil.

These increases occur despite a government measure that reduced the diesel excise duty by 25% for the first half of September. However, rising international oil prices have largely offset the impact of this fiscal relief. The surge in costs is expected to exert upward pressure on the prices of goods and services due to increased transport expenses.

In response to the rising costs of gasoline and diesel, there is a growing trend among Romanian drivers to switch to LPG (autogas) systems to reduce fuel expenditures. Specialized workshops report a significant increase in requests for LPG installations, which can offer substantial long-term savings compared to traditional fuels.

The National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) has begun monitoring fuel stations, noting that some operators have been fined between 100,000 and 500,000 lei for increasing prices multiple times a day, which violates regulations allowing only one price hike per day before noon.
