In Romania, the Ministry of Finance has increased the temporary diesel excise tax reduction to 25% for the period of September 1–15, 2026. This adjustment follows a 20% reduction in late August and is a response to rising international market prices and pump costs. The measure aims to protect consumer purchasing power and economic stability by mitigating the domino effect of high fuel costs on transport and logistics.

Despite these fiscal measures, fuel prices remain a point of contention. Analysts note a paradox where Romania, a significant oil producer, maintains higher fuel prices than neighboring Bulgaria, Serbia, and Moldova. Former Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan has called for increased oversight from authorities like the ANPC and ANAF to ensure price transparency and verify if tax reductions are being passed on to consumers.

Concurrently, the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) has experienced volatility, particularly in the energy and utilities sectors. Major indices like the BET and BET-NG saw declines, driven by significant drops in shares of companies such as Transelectrica and Electrica.

In Moldova, the fuel market is showing signs of stabilization as diesel and gasoline stocks recover. The Ministry of Energy reported that the number of stations facing shortages has decreased, with commercial stocks now covering approximately 8 to 9 days of average consumption.
