Romania fuel prices hit record highs as diesel exceeds 11 lei

Fuel prices in Romania have reached record highs, with diesel surpassing 11 lei per liter and gasoline exceeding 10 lei per liter across all major distribution networks. This surge follows a price increase by market leader OMV Petrom, which raised prices by 8 bani per liter on Friday morning.

Economic analysts, including Adrian Negrescu of Frames, warn that if global oil prices reach 130-140 dollars per barrel, pump prices could climb to between 13 and 15 lei per liter. The volatility is attributed to international logistical disruptions, specifically in the Strait of Hormuz. In response to regional supply pressures, Romania imported diesel from Albania and Tunisia in August for the first time in its history.

To mitigate the impact, the Romanian government has extended a 25% reduction in the diesel excise tax until September 30. Additionally, Romania has begun importing gas from Hungary via the Szeged–Arad pipeline to bolster domestic supplies and underground storage ahead of the winter season.
