Fuel prices in Romania remain high amid legislative shifts

Fuel prices in Romania are experiencing fluctuations following recent legislative changes aimed at addressing a fuel crisis. As of early August 2026, standard gasoline prices hover around 9.32 lei per liter, while diesel remains high, frequently exceeding the 10 lei per liter threshold. Some reports indicate slight downward trends in diesel prices, with averages reaching approximately 10.52 lei per liter, though many drivers express dissatisfaction with these marginal decreases.

Significant price disparities exist between Romania and neighboring Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, diesel prices have been reported as low as 8.95 to 9.45 lei per liter, creating a notable gap compared to Romanian rates where the cheapest diesel is around 10.47 lei per liter.

Political and economic debates continue regarding the cost structure of fuel. MEP Gheorghe Piperea has criticized the state's role, claiming that high taxes and commercial margins contribute significantly to pump prices. Meanwhile, political figures like Petrișor Peiu warn that despite new legislation involving dynamic excise duties, diesel prices are unlikely to drop below 10 lei per liter due to the heavy impact of taxes and refining costs.
