Romania grapples with soaring inflation and growing public pessimism
Two recent surveys show that inflation remains a dominant concern for Romanians. In May, 78% of respondents expected prices to keep rising over the next year, and 73% believed their living standards would worsen. Only 13% anticipated price stabilization. Households are cutting back on spending, with 61% reporting reduced purchases and a sharp drop in plans to buy cars or property. Savings are being hoarded, limiting bank deposits and corporate profits.
Romania now records the highest inflation rate in the European Union. Basic food and utility costs are nearly double pre‑pandemic levels, pushing families into severe financial strain. Many lack emergency savings and are forced to choose between food quality, energy bills, and medication. Access to private healthcare and educational investments has dwindled, fueling collective anxiety and anger that could fuel political extremism.
