Romania economy: wage gaps, energy, and regional disparities
Overview
Household finances in Romania remain under pressure through mid‑2026. While inflation eased to 10.4% in June, service-price growth and high costs for electricity, rents, and diesel continue to drive stress. Real wages fell 6.5% in May as nominal growth lagged inflation, shrinking purchasing power. The tax burden remains among the highest in the EU, with approximately 41.5% of gross earnings deducted.
Recent data confirms significant wage disparities. While average net salaries have surpassed 5,000 lei, the IT sector remains the highest paying, with senior specialists earning 15,000–25,000 lei. Private-sector doctors command 12,000–28,000 lei, while construction roles range from 6,000–14,000 lei. For a 1,000-euro net salary (roughly 5,250 lei), the gross wage must be 8,973 lei due to heavy deductions for pension, health, and income taxes.
Economic interests for private equity are shifting toward healthcare and energy, the latter surpassing IT. However, the energy sector faces challenges; Romania missed its 4,000 MW gas power capacity goal, contributing to factory closures. The pharmaceutical sector faces a significant deficit, importing €6 billion in medicines against less than €2 billion in exports.
Regional disparities are also evident in corporate benefits. Companies in Western and Central regions like Cluj and Timiș frequently offer medical subscriptions to attract skilled workers, whereas the South and Moldova regions, dominated by agriculture and SMEs, see much lower adoption of such benefits.
