Romania hit by consecutive drone attacks as EU speeds up anti‑drone defenses

In early June 2026 two separate drone incidents occurred in Romania. An air‑launched Geran‑2 drone struck a residential block in Galaţi, causing an explosion, fire and the evacuation of residents. A maritime drone later self‑detonated in the Civil Port of Constanţa; no casualties were reported but the blast prompted the closure of nearby beaches and heightened security measures. Ukrainian authorities said the maritime drone was Ukrainian but had been disrupted by Russian electronic‑warfare systems.

The attacks prompted European officials to highlight the need for rapid anti‑drone capabilities. The European Commission’s SAFE programme and the European Drone Defence initiative are accelerating the development of a so‑called “anti‑drone wall” – a network of radars, sensors, jamming systems and interceptors aimed at protecting critical infrastructure. Demonstrations of such technology were held in Denmark, and EU leaders, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, expressed solidarity with Romania and pledged further investment in air‑defence and anti‑drone systems.

The incidents underscore growing security concerns on NATO’s eastern flank and the Black Sea, where both aerial and maritime drone threats are becoming increasingly frequent.
