Romania implements solar-powered lighting for pedestrian crossings
Authorities in Romania are implementing solar-powered LED lighting systems at pedestrian crossings to enhance road safety and visibility, particularly in areas where public street lighting has been reduced to save energy.
In the Craiova region, the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR), through the Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges (DRDP) Craiova, has installed over 360 autonomous systems. These installations function independently of the traditional electrical grid, providing visibility during nighttime or foggy conditions.
In Brăila County, a project funded by the County Council has completed the installation of lighting at 128 pedestrian crossings across 34 communes. The investment, totaling approximately 4.97 million lei (excluding VAT), utilizes bilateral LED lighting to ensure pedestrians are visible to drivers approaching from both directions. Each crossing cost approximately 9,000 euros, including VAT.
