Romania imposes nationwide ovine disease quarantine amid food safety recalls

The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) announced emergency measures for the entire country after confirming a focus of Pestei Micilor Rumegătoare (PMR) in sheep in Mureș County. The National Committee for Emergency Situations ordered a 30‑day internal quarantine for sheep and goats, with regional committees to set implementation plans and possible adjustments based on the epidemiological situation. Authorities warned that unauthorised animal transport will be sanctioned and that farmers must follow strict biosecurity rules.

In parallel, the Veterinary Sanitary Directorate in Buzău (DSVSA) issued a food‑safety alert, withdrawing more than 500 kg of chicken meat contaminated with Salmonella and 175 kg of frozen herring infested with the parasite Anisakis. Inspectors examined 245 operators, identified numerous hygiene and labeling violations, imposed six fines totalling 43,600 lei and issued 15 warnings. Over 2,300 laboratory analyses were conducted to verify product safety.
