Romania imposes 30‑day quarantine on sheep and goats amid pox outbreak

Romania's Directorate for Veterinary Sanitary and Food Safety confirmed two outbreaks of sheep‑goat pox (Peste a micilor rumegătoare) in the Timiș County localities of Giulvăz and Tomnatic. Protection zones of 5 km and surveillance zones of 20 km were established, prohibiting transport of sheep, goats, meat and related products, with restrictions remaining in force for 33 days after final decontamination.

The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) subsequently ordered a nationwide 30‑day internal quarantine on all ovine and caprine movements after detecting the virus in a farm in Mureș County, alongside active African swine fever foci. Measures include a ban on grazing in affected areas, road‑side checks by police and border forces, and mandatory reporting of any suspected cases. Officials stress the virus does not transmit to humans but can cause significant economic losses in the livestock sector.
