Romania imposes and overturns extreme speeding penalties in Sibiu and Târgu Jiu

A driver was caught traveling 102 km/h on a 50 km/h road at the entrance to Sibiu on 11 May 2023. He received a fine of 1,305 lei and a 90‑day licence suspension. After appealing, the Court of Appeal ruled on 7 May 2025 that no speed‑limit sign was present at the entry point, nullifying the fine and restoring the licence.

In a separate incident, a 73‑year‑old driver in Dolj was recorded at 172 km/h on the Târgu Jiu beltway, where the limit is 90 km/h. Police imposed a fine of 4,050 lei and suspended his driving rights for 120 days. Both cases highlight strict enforcement of Romania’s traffic‑speed regulations and the role of judicial review in traffic penalties.
