Romania traffic enforcement and SMS scam alerts July 2026
Entities: Romanian Police · Simona Chivari · Poliția Română · Arad City Hall · TPARK
Overview
The nationwide traffic‑and‑drug enforcement drive that began in early July continued through the month, expanding its scope and issuing additional public warnings. After the July 24‑26 phase that covered towns such as Timișoara and Constanţa, police in Constanța and the resort of Mamaia carried out operations on July 24‑25, seizing a Bulgarian‑registered Mercedes Sprinter used for illegal melons, peppers and tomato vending and fining the seller 2,500 lei; similar seizures and fines were imposed on two other fruit‑vending vehicles.
In Argeș County, 131 roadside checks produced 404 alcohol and drug tests, 375 fines totalling more than 130,000 lei, the seizure of 22 licences and the withdrawal of 18 registrations; 84 fines were for excessive speed, seven of which led to licence suspensions for speeds over 50 km/h.
On July 27‑28 municipal police detained a drunk driver in Alba Iulia (breath‑alcohol 1.02 mg/L) for 24 hours and arranged hospital testing, while border police in Bihor impounded a €62,000 BMW registered in Poland that was flagged by an international database as sought for confiscation.
Prosecutors have also opened high‑profile fraud investigations: influencer Simona Chivari and former officer Marius Manea are charged with staged traffic accidents for insurance payouts, and a network selling Romanian citizenship for €7,500 per applicant using forged documents has been uncovered. The National Cybersecurity Directorate’s alert on fake parking‑fine SMS messages impersonating TPARK remains in effect, warning drivers not to click links that lead to cloned payment pages.
Overall, the operation has inspected more than 2,500 vehicles, retained over 1,000 licences, generated roughly 4.5 million lei in fines, and is now confronting related fraud schemes.
