Romania imposes heavy‑truck traffic bans in 35 counties amid heatwave
On June 29 and 30, 2026, Romania will enforce temporary traffic restrictions for vehicles with a maximum authorized total weight above 7.5 tonnes on national roads, expressways and highways in 35 counties. The bans apply between 12:00 and 20:00 and aim to protect the bituminous road surface from deformation caused by the extreme temperatures that prompted yellow, orange and red heat‑wave alerts from the National Meteorological Administration.
The restriction list includes the counties of Galaţi, Vrancea, Vaslui, Bacău, Iaşi, Neamț, Botoşani, Suceava, Bistriţa‑Năsăud, Maramureş, Satu Mare, Bihor, Sălaj, Cluj, Arad, Timiş, Caraş‑Severin, Hunedoara, Alba, Mureş, Sibiu, Harghita, Covasna, Braşov, Mehedinţi, Gorj, Vâlcea, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Argeș, Dâmboviţa, Prahova, Giurgiu and Ilfov. Exemptions cover passenger transport, live animals, perishable goods, emergency services, postal deliveries, fuel distribution, refrigerated cargo, humanitarian aid, military exercises and several other categories. The measure is issued under article 44(2‑3) of Government Ordinance no. 43/1997 on the road regime, and the National Road Administration (CNAIR) will monitor compliance.
