Romania imposes heavy‑vehicle traffic bans amid heatwave

Romanian authorities have introduced temporary traffic restrictions for vehicles with a maximum authorized total weight over 7.5 tonnes due to an ongoing heatwave. The Bistrița‑Năsăud County Council will enforce the ban on county roads from 27 to 29 June, between 12:00 and 20:00, to protect bituminous road surfaces from irreversible deformation caused by high temperatures.

The national road agency (CNAIR) issued a broader order for 29 and 30 June, applying the same weight limit on national roads, expressways and motorways across 31 counties, including major regions such as Bucharest, Cluj, Timiș, and Iași. The measures are based on heat alerts (yellow, orange, and red) issued by the National Meteorological Administration. Exemptions cover passenger transport, perishable goods, emergency services, funeral convoys, postal services, fuel distribution, refrigerated cargo, water and food aid, road‑maintenance equipment, military movements and other essential services.
