Romania inflation rises to 6.61% amid surging rents and fuel costs

Romania's annual inflation rate rose to 6.61% in September 2026, following three months of deflation. Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) indicates that the primary drivers of this increase are rising service costs, fuel prices, and rental rates.

Rental prices saw the most significant surge, increasing by 39.46% compared to September 2025. In the fuel sector, diesel prices rose by 37.61% and gasoline by 28.42%. The service sector overall experienced an 11.12% annual increase, including higher costs for utilities such as water, sewage, and waste management (+14.1%), as well as television subscriptions (+14%).

Food prices increased by an average of 3% over the last year. Notable rises within this category include coffee (+13.78%) and eggs (+10.84%). Conversely, some items like fresh fruit (-16.7%) and flour (-3.23%) saw price decreases.

Economically, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its outlook for Romania, projecting a 0.5% contraction in GDP for the year, a shift from previous growth forecasts. This economic pressure is compounded by a decline in consumer purchasing power that has persisted for 14 consecutive months.
