Romania Installs Neptun Deep Gas Platform, Advancing Black Sea Energy Hub

OMV Petrom and Romgaz have completed the installation of the Neptun Alpha offshore production platform in the Black Sea. The 16,500‑ton structure, lifted by the Saipem 7000 semi‑submersible crane vessel, marks a key milestone for the Neptun Deep gas project, which is on track to begin production in 2027 and is expected to strengthen Romania’s energy security and reduce import dependence.

Romania’s broader Black Sea strategy envisions the area as a multi‑purpose energy hub, adding a potential 11.5 GW of offshore wind capacity alongside existing oil and gas concessions. Draft offshore wind zones covering about 4,000 km² aim for an initial 3.1 GW by 2035, with further phases planned after 2035. The strategy calls for coordinated marine spatial planning to manage overlapping uses, including wind farms, hydrocarbon licences, fisheries, shipping lanes, and defence activities.
