Romania installs radar traffic light near Brașov and warns drivers about confusing P33 visibility sign

A radar‑equipped traffic light has been installed on DN 73 between Pitești and Brașov, about three kilometres from Brașov city. The device detects vehicles exceeding the 50 km/h limit from up to 200 m away and briefly switches to red, forcing drivers to stop. Authorities say the system, which cost slightly over 2,000 lei, is intended to prevent accidents on this heavily travelled tourist route rather than to issue fines.

Separately, Romanian motorists are being reminded of the European P33 road sign, first used in France in 2011 and later adopted by Spain in 2023. The sign warns of areas with severely reduced visibility due to weather or other factors. Many drivers mistakenly treat it as a prohibition sign. Safety experts advise reducing speed, increasing following distance, using daytime running lights, and activating fog lights when visibility drops below 50 m to avoid penalties and crashes.
