Romania intensifies veterinary controls following animal disease outbreaks

Authorities in Romania have launched significant veterinary interventions following the confirmation of multiple animal disease outbreaks in the counties of Tulcea and Neamț.

In Tulcea, the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) confirmed four outbreaks of sheep and goat pox in the localities of Valea Nucarilor, Peceneaga, Iazurile, and Ostrov. Over 100 veterinarians have been mobilized to monitor more than 355,000 animals. The emergency plan includes clinical evaluations, traceability checks, and strict monitoring of animal movement through collection centers and checkpoints to prevent further spread.

In Neamț, a case of rabies was confirmed in a bovine in the locality of Pădureni, Cândești commune. In response, authorities have established protection and surveillance zones. Measures include a three-month ban on the sale or transfer of animals from the area, mandatory vaccination for susceptible animals, and restrictions on the movement of carnivores, requiring dogs to be kept within domestic yards. Animals showing clinical signs of the disease are subject to euthanasia.
