Romania issues orange, red and flood warnings as torrential rains hit multiple counties

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued orange weather alerts for much of Romania on 22 July 2026, warning of intense thunderstorms, hail and wind gusts up to 90 km/h. A red weather warning was placed on Tulcea County, where forecasters expect rainfall of 90‑110 l / m² and gusts exceeding 80‑90 km/h. Simultaneously, the National Institute of Hydrology declared red flood alerts for the Provița basin in Prahova County and for rivers in Dâmbovița, Prahova, Constanţa and Tulcea, citing rapid runoff and rising water levels. The alerts prompted over 100 emergency‑service interventions: firefighters rescued people from flooded homes, cleared roads in Craiova, Ploieşti and numerous villages, and supported evacuations in Filipeşti, Păuleşti, Blejoi and other localities. In Bucharest, a now‑casting orange code warned residents to avoid travel as averses could reach 25‑40 l / m². The severe weather caused roof damage, fallen trees and temporary road closures, but no fatalities were reported. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to follow RO‑Alert messages and move to higher ground where red flood warnings apply.
