Romania issues orange and red weather alerts amid heavy rains and floods

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued a series of severe weather alerts across Romania in late July 2026. An orange code warning was declared for Bucharest and the Argeș county, indicating torrential downpours with rainfall up to 40 l/m² and frequent lightning, prompting RO‑ALERT messages advising residents to stay indoors and avoid travel.

Yellow‑code warnings were also activated for dozens of counties, including Arad, Timiș, Brașov, Prahova, Dâmbovița and others, foreseeing strong winds, hail and rain accumulations of 20‑50 l/m² on July 23‑24.

A red hydrological alert covered the Constanța and Tulcea river basins, warning of rapid rises in water levels and possible local flooding from July 22 18:00 to July 23 12:00. Similar red flood warnings were issued for Prahova and Dâmbovița, where torrential rains already caused road blockages, landslides and evacuations.

Severe storms hit several towns, toppling trees and damaging homes. In Craiova, emergency crews responded to fallen trees, roof damage and flooded courtyards. In Târgu Jiu, strong gusts uprooted multiple trees, prompting municipal clean‑up operations. Video footage from Sibiu showed firefighters placing sandbags and pumping water to protect properties. These events underscore widespread disruption and the need for public caution across the country.
