Romania faces heatwave followed by sudden storms and cooling

Romania is facing a period of extreme weather, beginning with a significant heatwave and followed by a sharp transition to stormy conditions. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued yellow code alerts for heat and thermal discomfort across various regions.

On Sunday, August 16, heat alerts cover Timiș, Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare, Maramureș, and Sălaj, with temperatures reaching 33–35 degrees Celsius. On Monday, August 17, the heatwave expands to include Banat, Crișana, parts of Oltenia, Transylvania, and northeast Moldavia, where temperatures may hit 37 degrees Celsius. In some western areas, the heat index (ITU) is expected to reach a critical threshold of 80 units.

A radical weather shift is forecast to begin on Monday night. From August 17 to August 18, the country will experience atmospheric instability, including torrential rains, wind gusts of 40–60 km/h, and potential small hail. This period will also bring a significant temperature drop, with maximum temperatures expected to decrease by 8–10 degrees Celsius in the north, center, west, and southwest of the country.
