Romania allocates €20 million EU funds for school and energy upgrades in Mehedinți, Petrila and Sfântu Gheorghe

Local authorities in Romania have secured more than €20 million in European Union funding and loans for a series of infrastructure projects.

In Mehedinți County, seven contracts totalling about €14.4 million were signed to improve energy efficiency in schools, a cultural centre and a fire station. The projects aim to lower energy consumption, cut operating costs and upgrade public service facilities.

In Petrila, Hunedoara County, a €2.5 million school modernisation programme, including €1.7 million of non‑refundable EU funds, will renovate classrooms, laboratories and digital equipment, and enhance accessibility for students with disabilities. Completion is targeted for the end of 2028.

Sfântu Gheorghe municipality approved a 40 million‑lei (≈ €7 million) internal loan to co‑finance its share of five PNRR‑backed projects, with total investment exceeding 109.7 million lei. The funds will cover thermal retrofits and modernisation of several schools, a preschool, and the conversion of a former cigarette factory into a Museum of Communism.
