Romania launches emergency vaccination campaign for sheep and goats

The Romanian National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) has initiated an emergency national vaccination campaign to combat Small Ruminant Peste and Ovine and Caprine Pox (VOC). The initiative aims to immunize livestock, eliminate disease outbreaks, and facilitate the resumption of animal exports.

The vaccines are being provided free of charge to animal owners, with the Romanian state covering all costs through the national budget. The first tranche of vaccines was sourced from the European Commission's strategic reserves following approval from the Romanian Government.

In Brașov, 25,000 doses of the VOC vaccine have been received as a reserve for high-risk farms, with plans to expand the campaign across the entire county. In Sibiu, where the sheep population is estimated between 500,000 and 550,000 heads, approximately 500,000 doses are required. The vaccination process in Sibiu will be conducted in stages based on dose availability and epidemiological priorities.
