Romania launches major road widening and rail noise‑reduction projects

The National Company of Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR) has submitted environmental documentation for the most extensive upgrade of the DN1S Șercaia–Hoghiz corridor in Brașov County. The plan, valued at 135.3 million lei, will widen the carriageway from 6 m to 7 m on key sections, rebuild a bridge in the Părău commune and refurbish a footbridge near Șercaia. Completion is targeted within three years, pending additional heritage and environmental approvals.

The National Railway Company (CNCF) has designated two railway segments around Buzău as “quiet routes” and will install sound‑barrier walls along them. Measures include speed and timetable adjustments, nighttime traffic reduction, and the phased withdrawal of old locomotives. Noise monitoring shows that up to 2,777 residents are exposed to levels above 55 dB, with 1,714 affected near the main line. The project also involves modernising 55 electric locomotives and converting 20 diesel shunters to battery‑electric units, aiming to lower ambient noise for nearby schools, parks and residential areas.
